It is indeed ironic that rowing, which has been practised in Malta for a long time, is not yet fully affiliated with the international body governing that sport – the Federation Internationale d’Aviron (Fisa).

The benefits derived from joining this federation include sports scholarships for promising young oarsmen, the provision of coaches and equipment, as well as the incentive to participate in international events.

This ancient traditional sport with its peculiar, sleek, beautiful and colourful boats that grace our Grand Harbour on March 31 and September 8, has to be nurtured and encouraged as part of our national heritage, maritime traditions and national identity.

To octogenarians of my generation rowing in the Grand Harbour evokes an exciting trip down memory lane, tinged with sweet nostalgia when on Saturday mornings the St Angelo boat, manned by Maltese sailors, was never beaten by the might of the British Navy in their encounters along the Grand Harbour fairway.

Our young generation should be given every opportunity to practise such a strenuous sport as we face the stark reality that we are probably going to have the first generation of parents who are fitter than their offspring.

I reiterate my conviction that giving young people a competitive outlet through a physical discipline is a very good thing. I do genuinely believe that playing a sport at competitive level – sensibly controlled – will help in the full development of young children. It will teach them to win and to lose with dignity.

While retaining the present format, the National Regatta Committee is apparently seeking new avenues to venture afield in international rowing quarters without weaning off our youngsters from the traditional boats.

I was pleased to hear that with the help of the Malta Olympic Committee tangible contacts have been established with the Italian Olympic Committee to help the local rowing association.

It has to be acknowledged that throughout the years the Italian institution has been a major contributor to local sport.

This is the way ahead when our sturdy lads will also venture out seeking new horizons.
