I refer to the letter from British High Commissioner Rob Luke, ‘Services offered by British High Commission’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, March 8), in response to my and another person’s letters. I am writing mainly because he ends his letter with the words “feedback is invaluable and we welcome it”.

I was pleased to read his letter for two reasons.

Luke states that he is “proud of the work done by my staff to help people”. This is, of course, very commendable but he should also acknowledge that there are many British expatriates in Malta who are totally dissatisfied with the service they receive from his office. Hence, by far, the majority of these maintain that the British High Commission is simply a “waste of space and money”.

It appears that Luke agrees with me when I say that the British government would do better to close the High Commission – although he does not say so in those exact words. In response to my specific questions, he gives me the Commission’s website address. He then tells me that I can see a local notary and also approach the British Residents Association. All this really means that there is no way that I will actually see a member of his staff.

I will keep this letter brief, as I think that protracted letters will get us nowhere. However, I must inform Luke that I am forwarding the published letters to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London along with copies to my British MP and MEP.

There is always the hope that I will receive a more positive response from those people.
