The fifth edition of the Goalkeeper Battle, a football-related challenge with most of the proceeds going to charity, will be held in the last weekend of May.

This was announced earlier this week by chief organisers Mario Muscat, himself a former national team goalkeeper, and Simon Grech who also played in goal during his career in the Maltese football league.

Teamsport will be the main sponsor through their brand Macron and the venue for the ‘battle’ will be the Birkirkara FC training grounds at Infetti, Mrieħel.

For the second consecutive year, profits from sponsorships and gates will go directly to the Zem Zem Foundation, a voluntary organisation that provides assistance to patients suffering from acute diseases such as leukaemia.

The main attraction at the Infetti ground on May 30-31 will be a friendly challenge between Malta international goalkeepers Andrew Hogg and Justin Haber.

There will be eight categories and up to 32 goalkeepers in each class can participate.

The competition starts with group qualifiers before the knock-out stages right up to the final.

The age-groups have been classified thus: U-9, U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19, seniors and girls.

Each game has a duration of four minutes and qualified Malta FA referees will supervise the competition.

Trophies will be distributed to the top three in each section and all participants will be given Macron kits, Numero 1 keeper gloves and a commemorative medal.

Again, there will be two special awards, one for the top-scorer of the tournament and the other for the keeper conceding least goals.

Application forms can be collected from Teamsport in Iklin, Di Milano Paola, the Infetti football grounds and clubs and nurseries in Malta and Gozo.

One may also obtain more details by phoning 7962-0045, 9949-6628.

Closing date for applications is May 17. Draws will be held on May 24.
