The University’s Faculty for Social Wellbeing is to organise the training of 340 nurses working in care homes for older people and in the community. The training programmes aim to help the staff develop an advanced understanding of multidisciplinary perspectives on ageing and dementia studies.

The faculty will also provide training to around 320 staff working in the area of disability, on topics such as communication skills and techniques, empowerment, ownership, effective participation and assisting staff in dealing with difficult situations. It will also train Aġenzija Sapport frontline staff and support workers in topics such as choice and opportunities, person-centred approaches, professional boundaries and care practices.

The training forms part of a European Social Fund project en-­titl­ed Capacity Building in Care for the Elderly and Persons with Disability. Foreign lecturers will be involved in providing the training.

At a ceremony held to sign a memorandum of understanding on the subject Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana said the training was crucial to provide quality care for the elderly and disabled people.
