A new consultative council to draft a national film policy has been appointed by Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis.

The council will represent 12 organisations including PBS, Malta Tourism Authority, University of Malta, Malta College of Science, Arts and Technology, the creative industry and the Employment and Trade Corporation.

Dr Zammit Lewis said the council, which held its first meeting yesterday, had to draft a national film policy that would be launched for public consultation. The government planned to have the final policy approved by November this year.

He said it was important to create a new economic niche that operated all year round.

In 2013, there was a direct injection of €5 million from the film industry in the local economy that went up to €29 million in 2014.

“There is great potential in the sector but there is also great competition abroad and we want to attract more film productions,” he said.
