After a disappointing previous weekend, where the Winter Wallop final had to be postponed until next month, Marsa CC played a two-game series against English side Ingol CC who hail from Preston, Lancashire.

On Saturday, the home team batted first and managed a moderate score of 212 from their 40 overs, their tally aided by 42 extras.

John Grima top scored with 50 runs, his 52nd half-century against touring teams. It was a patient innings which included five boundaries.

Paul Bradley added 44 valuable runs and Haroon Majeed 34.

For Ingol, Eddie Oldfield was the main wicket-taker with three, while Wild Smith, Joe Wood and L. Zolly took one each.

The visitors’ reply started badly, losing four wickets for 42 runs in the first 14 overs. They never recovered after that as Ingol were bowled out for 150 in the 38th over.

Sammy Khan was Ingol’s top scorer with 42 runs, Anthony Dennis made 35 and Joe Wood 25. Extras were worth 30 points.

For Marsa, Imran Salim, Paul Bradley and Kevin Krishna all took two wickets each.

On Sunday, Ingol CC batted first and yet again they were bowled out, this time for 140 runs.

Matthew Walker was the only stand-out batsman with 40 runs. Philip Houghton made 16 and extras again were high with 30.

Young Suhrid Roy spun his way to his first five-wicket haul. Mike Caruana took three and Malik Asif one. The other wicket was a great fielding effort from Bikram Arora who threw down the stumps and left the batsman well short of his ground.

In reply, the Marsa batsmen took 24 overs to reach their target and seal the series 2-0.

A superb opening partnership of 121 runs, between Arora (79) and Feroz Ahmed (35) set up the victory. Niraj Khanna (11 not out) and Malcolm Crabbe (four not out) saw the home team to victory. Interesting enough there were only 12 extras.

Mt Hawke & Porthtowan CC will be the next visiting team at Marsa. They’ll play the locals in a three-game series.
