The man charged with murdering his 61-year-old father-in-law in front of the man's daughter and her children has been granted bail against a personal guarantee of €50,000, and sources said he is planning to sell his home to fund it.
Gregorio Scicluna, 53, had been granted bail last October but the Magistrates' Court decree had been revoked after the Attorney General's appeal was upheld.
He filed another application which was this time accepted by Mr Justice Antonio Mizzi, presiding over the Criminal Court. He was granted bail against a deposit of €50,000 as well as a €50,000 personal guarantee.
Mr Justice Mizzi also ordered him to sign the bail book daily and be home by 9pm every day.
Mr Scicluna stands accused with killing Joseph Caruana who was shot dead in front of his daughter and grandchildren on October 27, 2013, at his home in Kalkara.
He is also accused of the attempted murder of the victim’s daughter – his former partner Simone Caruana – and the couple’s three children.
In a previous court sitting, the court was told that a pellet hit Mr Caruana in his spine. He also had a fractured skull and a lacerated brain. The victim suffered a brain haemorrhage due to a blow to the head.
It was explained in court that Mr Caruana was hit so hard on the head with the butt of the gun that the weapon broke in two.
Last October, the Attorney General argued that the accused did not satisfy the conditions at law to be granted bail and pointed out that Mr Scicluna was a relapser after having been found guilty of assisting a woman in her attempt to kill her husband in the past.
