A man is trying to find the place where his twin siblings were laid to rest after his mother miscarried in Malta 60 years ago.

Jeff Stewart, 56, flew in from Australia last week and with the help of Times of Malta readers has managed to piece together some information about his parents’ short stint on the island.

Marie and James Stewart lived in Malta between 1956 and 1957, when Jeff’s father was based at an allied forces signal base in Floriana.

The couple returned to England with Jeff’s elder brother, James, who was two at the time. Their father passed away in May 1958, three months before Jeff was born. The family moved to Australia in 1980.

“I never knew my dad, and this is why I’m carrying out my research. The day before my mother died, in 1997, she told me to find out more about my dad and his service in the Royal Navy,” he told this newspaper on his first visit to Malta with his wife, Veronica.

A 92-year-old woman who got in touch with Mr Stewart after a letter appeared in Times of Malta last week recalled “how happy and lovely” the Stewart couple had been.

The woman was friends with the Stewart couple while they lived in Malta and also in England. She looked after the late Mrs Stewart when her husband passed away in 1958.

Mrs Stewart miscarried twins on May 23, 1957, and her son believes the twins were cremated, but he has not found any record of them yet.

He has, however, found out that his father worked at the Hafmed, which stands for Headquarters Allied Forces Mediterranean, in Floriana.

His commanding officer in Malta was Captain A. Hawkins.

Mr Stewart was also told that his parents lived somewhere in Sliema, but the town has changed so much since then that he has not been able to locate the exact place.

His mother told him they used to live in an apartment building “close to Marshall Court”.

The block was probably called The Mansions and situated somewhere along the Sliema Front.

Mr Stewart may return to Malta to continue his search and is currently in England to search for more information about his parents.

Whoever has any information that could help Mr Steward with his research, especially details about the whereabouts of the twins’ remains, is asked to get in touch at jeffrstewart@live.com or to call 0061 432 530080.
