The government has requested the Auditor General to investigate aid schemes for local councils administered under the former government. 

In a statement it said the schemes had led some local councils into serious financial difficulties, as shown in the  “Report by the Auditor General on the Workings of Local Government 2013”.

The report had pointed to significant commitments that the councils entered into during the preceding years, especially with the introduction of the PPP scheme 15, which costs add up to millions of euros.

The government said it also wanted to know whether the schemes were administered fairly and transparently.

The request follows another request made by Nationalist MP David Agius yesterday about the administration of a fund for capital projects for the councils.
