Gudja came back from two goals down to end Fgura’s 15-match unbeaten run at the Centenary Stadium yesterday.

The victory lifted Gudja up to fifth place on 37 points, just two points adrift of Fgura who occupy the third spot which would provide a promotion play-off against the third bottom team in the Premier League.

Fgura were in control for much of the first part of the match and they took the lead on 17 minutes.

Josef Dalli picked up the ball 40 metres out, dribbled past Clint Farrugia and Edile Michelleti Awoh and hit a firm drive that flew past a helpless Yenz Cini, the Gudja goalkeeper.

Dalli almost struck again on the half hour but this time his shot on the run finished just wide.

Fgura doubled their lead on 38 minutes when Philip Chircop stabbed home from a Dalli cross.

But Gudja reopened the match four minutes later when Peter Paul Sammut teed up Angelo Catania who tapped home.

Fgura almost restored their two-goal lead early in the second half when Dalli picked Andre Farrugia whose header just missed the target.

Gudja drew level on 54 minutes when Sammut’s delivery inside the area found Catania who somehow bundled the ball past a fumbling Fgura goalkeeper Brandon Bartolo.

Gudja went on to clinch the winner on 72 minutes when George Chircop’s grounder was not held by Bartolo with the ball falling to Catania who quickly served Sammut who stabbed home.

Fgura almost saved a point on 83 minutes when Roland Emeka nodded the ball into the path Philip Chircop who saw his shot cleared off the line by Isaac Galea.
