I must confess I have a soft spot for Tonio Borg as I was in the same class with his father at St Aloysius College but I must say his article, ‘The Lord Denning of Malta’ (March 18), was first class and covered most aspects of Maurice Caruana Curran’s life and character.

Although I come from a different profession I have had many close contacts and associations with Maurice. For many years he was the president of the Malta Government Professional Officers Associations and I served on the committee and collaborated on many memoranda with him.

He was also the chairman of the Traffic Control Board on which I was the technical member and he took this very seriously, never missing a sitting, sometimes late at night. He was torn between the necessity of traffic signs to regulate traffic flow and safety and their negative visual impact on the urban townscape.

When Maurice set up Din l-Art Ħelwa our architectural firm was a founder member and I served on the committee for several years. Unfortunately, there were some members who took a negative stance against any form of development, which I could not accept.

Occasionally, he would call me to discuss matters of a technical nature as he used to say he valued my judgement. Unfortunately, his health declined prematurely and when I visited him at Casa Antonia some time ago he did not recognise me at first and then grabbed my hands and burst into tears.

He was truly a man all Malta should be proud of.
