Sacked: Struggling Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles fired coach Foeke Booy yesterday as they plunged into relegation danger after a home loss on Saturday to Vitesse Arnhem. Booy had already announced his intention to leave at the end of the season but a run of five successive defeats has seen the club replace him with Alfons Groenendijk, a statement said.

PSV beaten: Anass Achahbar scored two dream goals for Feyenoord as they beat runaway leaders PSV Eindhoven 2-1 yesterday to delay their opponents’ march to the Dutch league title. PSV’s slip enabled champions Ajax Amsterdam to cut Eindhoven’s lead at the top to eight points when Davy Klaassen conjured up a late winner in their 1-0 home victory over ADO Den Haag.

Hamburg: Hamburg have sacked Josef Zinnbauer after just six months in charge, appointing their director of football Peter Knabel as head coach until the end of the season. They made the move after a 1-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin left the club inside the bottom three of the Bundesliga having failed to win any of their last six, including an 8-0 humbling by Bayern Munich.

Benfica: Portuguese league leaders Benfica suffered a 2-1 defeat at Rio Ave, succumbing to two late goals and briefly offering unexpected hope to their nearest pursuers. Yet Porto, Benfica’s major rivals for the title, missed out on a golden opportunity to close the gap at the top to just one point after only managing a 1-1 draw at Nacional de Madeira. Instead, Benfica now lead by three points with 65 points to Porto’s 62.
