Malta Tourism Authority’s sports segment unit has promoted the Maltese islands as an ideal sports tourism destination at a number of international travel fairs.

These included The Telegraph Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show, which is the UK’s largest exhibition for adventurous people and the Fiets en Wandelbeurs fair held in Amsterdam.

The MTA believes that the niche market of sports tourism in Malta and Gozo has a large potential for growth, and that mild winters would help in attracting people in the shoulder months.

Key activities promoted at the MTA stands included walking, hiking, climbing, camping, canoeing, kayaking, cycling and mountain biking.

In London, more than 25,000 people took part in an MTA contest to win a three-night stay in a four-star hotel in Malta, with three half-days of sports activities across Malta and Gozo.
