We are told that Malta is buzzing. In the words of a euphoric Prime Minister in the aftermath of two years of a Labour administration, this is a time for change, renewal and modernity.

But is Malta really changing?

As we bask in the glow of a solid economic recovery, an excellent image in the Commonwealth, a vibrant baroque capital city soon to be crowned a European cultural city with a Renzo Piano imprint, a tenor of world acclaim, an enviable historical heritage and a booming tourist industry, an exercise in brainstorming would be in order. How much of this is overshadowed by allegations of scandal, deceit and corruption and how does the international community view us?

Eschewing cynicism, we must all appreciate that it is great to live in this modern era blessed with ever expanding social services, a robust economy, free education, a beautiful climate and no ethnic divisions. All these benefits are showered on a small island bereft of any natural resources but with highly competent human resources.

However, this ‘feel good’ factor is being continually threatened and eroded by a series of corruption allegations corroding our national identity. Never in our long constitutional history have so many allegations of scandalous abuse of power from all quarters surfaced in such a short time.

As things stand we are exposing our dear island to self-flagellation as if Malta is wallowing in the murky morass of a corrupt banana republic. This is the time for all Maltese to work hard to rescue our island from this incessant mud-slinging and in the process brand a new Malta.

It is our duty, on the 450th anniversary of the Great Siege of Malta, when our country was Europe’s bulwark, to present a pleasant image of our native land renowned for its unbounded hospitality and for being a safe haven of peace and prosperity and proud of its cultural, ecclesiastical and architectural heritage.
