In his letter ‘The Church must act’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, March15), Amabile Galea said: “I would like to know Scicluna’s views on contraception within marriage and the receiving of Communion by remarried divorcees”.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna has already given him the answer on his coat of arms: Fidelis Et Verax (Faithful and Truthful). So, Scicluna is declaring to one and all that he will be faithful to the teaching of Christ and his one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church on both “contraception within marriage and the receiving of Communion by remarried divorcees”. This teaching is briefly expressed in the Church’s catechism.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilisation or contraception).”

It also states: “If the divorced are remarried civilly, they find themselves in a situation that objectively contravenes God’s law. Consequently, they cannot receive Eucharistic communion as long as this situation persists. For the same reason, they cannot exercise certain ecclesial responsibilities. Reconciliation through the sacrament of Penance can be granted only to those who have repented for having violated the sign of the covenant and of fidelity to Christ, and who are committed to living in complete continence.”

Does Galea expect our dear Archbishop Scicluna to act against the teaching of the Catholic Church, of which he is the head?
