The Archbishop’s Seminary in Rabat will be saving around 1,475 litres of water per day thanks to the completion of a new innovative project sponsored by HSBC water programme, Catch the Drop.
The Hippo water-saving technique is a simple and low-cost measure to reduce the consumption of water. Once installed in the cistern system inside a restroom, Hippo bags save approximately three litres of water each time a system is flushed.
The 1,475 litres of water saving was calculated on the assumption that every student and teacher at the school will flush the system once a day.
The project led to the retrofitting of all facilities at the school with Hippo bags.
Secondary students also received household packs to further implement the project at their home and to become lifelong water conservation advocates.
The school project was funded by the bank’s outreach programme for the 2013-2014 scholastic year under which schools competed for HSBC funding to implement groundbreaking ideas in water conservation. The programme for scholastic year 2014-2015 has been expanded to also include local councils.
To celebrate World Water Day, HSBC held a week-long series of activities. They included an art exhibition at President’s Palace, a walkabout by Marsa primary students, a walkabout in Valletta by various other schools, followed by a water-themed show and the announcement of the winners of the outreach programme for 2014-2015 scholastic year.
The activites ended with a conference on water conservation.
