With a line-up that promotes non-mainstream music in Maltese and various other forms of art, the first edition of Kotra promises to be an eclectic affair.

Jeremy Grech, one of the organisers from the Rejects Crew, explains the idea behind the event.

“The first time we discussed the idea of Kotra’s concept was about two years ago, though due to other commitments and projects, such as the first tattoo expo, we never got the time to really develop it.

“Towards the end of last year however, we decided it was the right time to make it happen.

There is a lot of underground talent being left behind

“The idea behind Kotra is to create a cultural gathering promoting the artistic element present in our Maltese language which would be looked at not just as a simple gig, but rather as a whole platform where the not-so-mainstream entities catch up and share their creations without censorship.

“The aim is to turn this into a yearly concept to boost the local artistic and music underground scene. This year, both the musical performers and the visual artists’ line-ups are very diverse and that’s the direction we want to take, instead of focusing on the usual mainstream acts or one genre.

“While we do respect mainstream artists and musicians, there is a lot of underground talent being left behind from all existing scenes. In this year’s edition we aimed at including work from scenes ranging from hip-hop to folk/rock and punk, while on the visual artists side we have a variety of styles ranging from street art to digital art, story-telling, abstract and horror.

“The line-up includes five of the best local acts performing on stage, an art exhibition with four top local artists, a street artist performing during the night, a stall with a vast selection of contemporary Maltese books, Furban Malti promoting a brand new concept, and the group Kelma Kelma, who have helped in the creation of the event. And most of all, an overall great vibe.”

Kotra takes place on Saturday at Razzett l-Aħmar, Attard.
