The Maltese national team started their EU 8 Nations title defence on a bad footing after losing the opening two matches from the qualifying group, in Odense, yesterday.

Malta lost to Denmark ‘B’ 7-6 and Karl Izzo’s men failed to recover from that setback after going down 11-5 to Ireland in the evening fixture.

Ben Plumpton, Michele Stellini, Michael Spiteri Staines, Jerome Gabaretta, Dino Zammit and Michael Rizzo were Malta’s goal-getters against the Danes.

Kai Dowling, Peter Borg, Mark Meli, Spiteri Staines and Zammit scored against Ireland who lost their first match earlier in the day – 11-9 to Switzerland.

Malta play against the Swiss this morning before the classification matches later in the day. The tournament comes to a close tomorrow.
