A-League: James Brown scored the only goal as Melbourne City shocked high-flying Sydney FC yesterday. Brown’s strike nine minutes from time handed Melbourne a 1-0 win and kept Sydney a point behind league leaders Wellington Phoenix who face Brisbane Roar tomorrow. The result also moves City five points clear of Brisbane in the race for the final play-off spot but the Roar have three games in hand.

Summoned: Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marseille playmaker Dimitri Payet have been called before the French Football League disciplinary commission to explain their recent comments about referees. Both players had expletive-laden tirades about the officials caught on camera following their respective sides’ disappointing results last Sunday. They have been called to face the commission at its session on April 9.

Barton: QPR are hoping to have midfielder Joey Barton back in time for tomorrow’s Premier League match at home to Everton. Barton, who has missed his team’s last three league games through suspension, sustained a knock in training this week and is doubtful for the encounter at Loftus Road. QPR coach Chris Ramsey will make a late decision on Barton.

No friendly: Nigeria’s Football Federation has accused Bolivia of having “chickened out” of a March 25 friendly and said their excuses “do not hold any water.” Bolivia said it had pulled out due to concerns over security. “Uganda replaces Bolivia, who chickened out at the eleventh hour despite signing a contract with the NFF and sending a list of its delegation for visa-on-arrival. Their excuses do not hold any water,” said the federation’s match agent Jairo Pachon.

Carrick: Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a one-year contract extension, the Premier League club said yesterday. The 33-year-old has been at Old Trafford since 2006, winning five Premier League titles and becoming a cornerstone of the United midfield with his cultured passing and disciplined defensive work. Carrick, who started his career at West Ham United before moving to Tottenham, has played nearly 400 games for United.

BOV Division Two: Ghaxaq vs San Gwann 0-3.
