After reading Times of Malta, I thought about the very positive impact it would have on a tourist if the whole island, including its countryside and pathways, could be kept cleaner.

It would not be difficult to organise (I have done so in France) a Green Clean-up Campaign Day to remove rubbish, plastic bottles and so on.

Adding to this community campaign, one by the schools would only increase its effectiveness and make a bigger impact on the national environment.

No doubt, sponsors could be found to offer presents and prizes.

Such a small island could become the most fascinating place thanks to its security, the historical sites, the climate it enjoys and the kindness of its people.

Twenty years ago, Germany had introduced a refund on plastic bottles and, after just a few weeks, no more of them were to be seen in the countryside.
