Frustrated Floriana drew blank in an under-par performance against Qormi.

Floriana held the initiative for long stretches but their performance was devoid of flair and bite up front.

They had a good chance to open the scoring on 23 minutes but goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia stood in their way. Steve Pisani’s corner soared towards Matteo Piciollo whose close-range header was repelled by Farrugia.

Relying on counter-attacks, Qormi mustered a typically breakaway that had Floriana on the backfoot after 35 minutes. Villalobas exchanged the ball with Marcelinho before sprinting into the penalty area but his shot was blocked by Matthew Calleja Cremona.

The Greens remained the brighter side after the break. Vito Plut, produced a cut pass to free Clyde Borg but the latter shot volleyed over with only Farrugia to beat.

Six minutes later, Marcelinho, the most influential player on the field, strode out of midfield before squaring for Villalbos who shot straight at Calleja Cremona.

Past the hour mark, Plut’s free-kick was pushed over the bar by Farrugia. On 78 minutes, Alfred Effiong produced a cute reverse pass to free Villalobos who out-sprinted Sacha Borg but Calleja Cremona blocked him in time. Next to no time the goalkeeper the ball to attack where Plut missed the target by a whisker.

It was all Floriana now. Seven minutes from time, Farrugia produced a smart save to keep out Pluto’s point–blank header.

In stoppage-time, Coronado won a free-kick outside the penalty area, the Brazilian picked himself up top curl a fine shot but Farrugia was up to task and saved well.
