A process is currently underway to draw up a film industry cooperation agreement between Malta and China, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said today as he announced the shooting of Sonata Malta, the first Chinese film to ever be shot in Malta.

Speaking this morning during the launch of new initiatives to the Malta Film Fund, Dr Zammit Lewis said that in the last six months of last year, the industry generated around €28 million. This was after Malta managed to attract nine productions.

The minister said that, since the beginning of last year, the Film Commission would have invested around €1 million in training for Maltese workers and artists.

For this aim, incentives offered by the Malta Film Fund were being revised and the fund now had a total allocation of €250,000.

This year, the Commission announced five scheme with the introduction of two new initiatives and would provide further help for qualifying projects.

Certain cases would also enjoy total financing.

New categories to encourage new talent were also set up to encourage new talent.

The aim of the government was to develop a local film industry and to have a work force ready to accept a number of foreign productions.
