The German Grand Prix could be scrubbed from this year’s Formula One calendar after Hockenheim reportedly turned down the chance to stage the race.

Georg Seiler, managing director of the circuit, said Hockenheim would not be putting on the race which is due to take place on July 19.

Seiler told German newspaper Bild: “We have no more hope that Formula One will take place here.

“Time has expired for organising a race here. The quality of the event would have suffered.”

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said in January the race would take place for a second successive season at Hockenheim, ending a previous arrangement that had seen it shared with the Nurburgring, with the circuits staging it in alternating years.

Bild reported that Hockenheim ruled out staging the race over issues including the sale of tickets, which had not yet begun.

It also said that crowds had shrunk since the glory days of Michael Schumacher, despite the recent successes of German drivers Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg.
