All business has some level of risk. Management’s task is to minimise risks and maximise profits. Some level of risk can be reduced through insurance and internal controls. However, entrepreneurs are inevitably left with a degree of residual risk, also related to their logistics operations. Hence, enterprises are now even more than ever seriously investigating how to conduct business and engage suppliers and contractors to reduce logistic risk.

Shipping and logistics are becoming increasingly sophisticated sectors to operate in. As the risks involved increase, transport companies, importers and exporters have to ensure they are constantly in compliance with the demands of more stringent regulations. Failure to do so could lead to serious financial and corporate repercussions.

“For instance, when cargo is hazardous, transportation via air, sea or road is covered by numerous regulations with intricate specifications that are constantly being updated. This is why it is important for companies to ensure they are being serviced by trusted and experienced transport and logistics providers who are compliant and fully-versed in the intricate guidelines and regulations about transport,” says Jesmond Mifsud, a senior manager from Express Trailers.

Mifsud’s specialisation in air cargo with 23 years of experience is backed by certification in handling hazardous cargo, perishables, valuables, and time and temperature sensitive consignments. Mifsud is also an instructor on aviation security certified by Aviation Security Malta within the Ministry of Home Affairs and National Security and today he manages Express Trailers’ Sales Department.

“A clear and seamless synergy must be in place between a transport company’s sales team and the rest of the organisation. Sales people are the ones in touch with the clients on a daily basis, handling orders and managing timeframes. No matter the mode of transport, a responsible transporter also needs to consider compatibility and in the case of hazardous goods, these need to be shipped in a special segregated manner,” Mifsud explains.

“Vision, a will to succeed, and an obsession to be leaders in our sector are the main drivers of this company, in our daily operations,” says Franco Azzopardi, chairman and CEO of Express Trailers. “Our greatest reward comes from satisfied clients who trust us for our experience, credibility and commitment. We have invested a lot in our infrastructure but our real strength lies in our professional people who contribute to deliver a service to all our customers with minimal residual risks.”
