The Malta FA has reiterated its strong condemnation of any form of abuse and violence in domestic football in light of the incidents that marred a number of matches over the past weeks.

“Any kind of aggression on match officials, adminis-trators and players goes against the values of the game of football and therefore, no physical or verbal abuse on those who, in some way or another, take part in sporting events, will be tolerated,” the MFA said in a statement.

The statement comes in the wake of the incidents that overshadowed the Under-19 league game between Swieqi United and St George’s, played last week.

According to reports, referee Karl Frendo Cumbo had to be escorted away from the pitch at the Sirens Stadium after two St George’s players tried to assault him in the closing stages of the match.

“The Malta FA, as it has always done in the past, will be taking disciplinary action against the aggressors to ensure that justice is done and the games be played in a sporting spirit,” the state-ment added.

“Respect between the players, administrators, supporters and match officials is a top priority for the Malta FA and its members.

“Thus, all those concerned must take responsibility for any irresponsible behaviour that violates the principle embraced by the entire footballing family.”
