A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible from Malta on Friday morning.

The Astronomical Society said the 'path of totality' (where the sun will be completely hidden by the dark body of the moon) crosses the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, with a maximum duration two minutes 47 seconds. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Russia.

As seen from Malta, about 49% of the Sun’s diameter will be hidden at maximum eclipse. First contact occurs at 9.21 am with maximum at 10.25 am and last contact at 11.33 am.

Following first contact, at the sun’s northern limb, the moon will appear to advance eastwards across the solar disk.

The society warned those looking at the eclipse to wear proper eye protection.
The safest way to view this eclipse is to watch the Sun’s image projected onto a piece of paper.

"Make a small hole in a card with a pencil point and hold a second card a metre or so behind it. The hole will project an inverted image of the Sun onto the lower card."
