The Malta FA yesterday issued charges against Gozitan club Nadur Youngsters, and their secretary Anthony Sam Portelli, and Xewkija Tigers player Peter Buttigieg following their alleged involvement in a match-fixing case ahead of a GFA Division One match, on February 7.

Last month, Portelli and another person, George Joseph Sultana, were arraigned in court accused of trying to illegally influence the result of the top-of-the-table clash between Nadur and Xewkija. They were both found guilty and sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for two years.

The MFA said that following an EXCO meeting it was decided that charges would be filed against Portelli and Buttigieg for their alleged involvement in the case.

They will be temporary banned from all football activities until the MFA competent bodies carry out their judgment over the case.

“Since Anthony Sam Portelli was a Nadur committee member when the alleged case occurred, charges will also be issued against the club,” the MFA said.

As regards Sultana, the MFA wants him banned from the game.

“The Executive Committee is proposing to the Council that George Joseph Sultana, who is not a MFA member, will be declared persona non grata,” the MFA said.

“If the proposal is accepted he will not involve himself in any football activities in Malta and Gozo.”
