A contemporary sculpture exhibition consisting of a large collection of works by Maltese sculptors that documents roughly 100 years of local expression in bronze, wood, gesso, fibre, papier mâché, ceramics, terracotta, stone and metal is being held at Cavalieri Art Hotel, St Julian’s, until March 25.
The exhibition, the result of a lifetime research on local art history and criticism reflecting the influence of known and less well-known masters who taught the subject or were the heads of the School of Art, was introduced by its curator E. V. Borg and inaugurated by Mariella Pisani Bencini.
Exhibiting their works are Vincenzo Cardona, Antonio Micallef, Vincent Apap, George Borg, Samuel Bugeja, Anton Agius, Joseph Casha, Joseph Chetcuti and Ganni Pace.
The sculptors are directly represented or are keenly felt in the work of their students. The works also reflect the profound vision and concept of Antonio Sciortino whose overwhelming influence surfaces in the work of John Spiteri Sacco.
Borg will be giving a presentation about the exhibition on Wednesday at 6.30pm at the Apollo Hall, Cavalieri Art Hotel, St Julian’s. Borg, who curated other sculpture exhibitions, including Maltese Sculpture and Ceramics, An Idiom in Wood and An Exhibition of Ceramics, will also lead guests through the Monet and Renoir galleries explaining the main works included in the exhibition.
Optional buffet dinner will be offered after the talk. Those wishing to attend are kindly to confirm their participation by calling 2318 0851 or marketing@cavalierihotel.com.
A catalogue documents the 41 sculptors and their work.
