Over 200 visual artists living in 200 different countries are using their art and their national flags in a bid to raise global awareness about the value of freedom. Malta was represented by Ray Piscopo.
French contemporary artist Klaus Guingand launched the resulting global artwork, Art Warning the World, through an online video which attracted over a million and a half views over 18 days.
The work gathers 202 artists, 200 countries, 202 national flags, 202 videos, 202 photos and a warning translated into 135 national languages in what is probably the first time in history that an artwork will unite the entire world.
To create this work, Klaus Guingand looked for an artist in every country of the world. Each chosen artist painted the following warning on their national flag:
“When the word freedom disappears from our dictionaries, it will be too late to react.”
The warning was translated into each national language. Each artist created their flag, along with a video and a photograph of themselves with their work. The video can be streamed online.
