Having visited a friend of mine last week at Karen Grech Rehabilitation Centre, I was appalled by what I saw. This is an establishment where patients go to get better and to find peace and quiet. What I found was exactly the opposite.

The noise coming from the nurses’ room was unbearable. There were about six or eight of them, shouting, laughing and doing anything but paying attention and having some respect for the patients in the ward.

A phone was ringing continuously at the bed next to my friend and the person concerned was not there. I eventually picked it up and asked the nurse to take it to the person concerned. Because of all the noise they were making, they could not hear the continuous ringing but the patients in the ward were going crazy. When I asked them how they could stand this, I was told it is like that all day long!

Another friend of mine went to visit on another day and found that they had put the patient sitting in a hard chair for hours. They could at least have put a pillow on the seat. The patient never complained but I think it’s a big shame to see these things happening, especially when you know that these patients are already suffering enough. A little bit of TLC goes a long way.

I beg the authorities to visit the place and form their own opinion.
