A Sterling Jewellers salesgirl was today handed a suspended jail term after pleading guilty to stealing thousands of euro worth of jewellery from her place of work since the beginning of the year.
Jo Anne Camilleri, 40, from San Gwann, pleaded guilty to stealing the jewellery between January and March.
The court heard how the police found several items of jewellery at her house worth some €3,500, including rings, earrings, bangles and necklaces.
The matter reached the police after the owners and managers of Sterling Jewellers began noticing that stock was going missing.
After having considered her early guilty plea, the fact that she had returned the stolen items and the fact that she was a first-time offender, Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras sentenced the salesgirl to a two-year jail term suspended for four years.
Police Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Trevor Micallef prosecuted while lawyer Victor Bugeja appeared for the woman.
