Malta will be joining the rest of the world to celebrate World Kidney Day on Thursday. The Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital will be holding a series of activities to mark this important day.

A blood donation event will be held today at 10am at the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Guardamangia. On Thursday, there will be blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring stands, together with a transplant support stand, in the main foyer of Mater Dei Hospital between 9am and 1pm.

This will be followed by a lecture on kidney disease and prevention by Prof. Emanuel Farrugia in the hospital’s foyer until 2pm.

Next Sunday, a fun walk to create awareness on healthy lifestyles and to prevent kidney diseases will leave Tigné Point Square at 9.30am for St George’s Square, Valletta.

Vivian Corporation launched the first activities for this international campaign in 2009. Funds were raised for patient organisations, public seminars were held and the first recipe book for kidney care was launched.
