Rebecca Bonello Ghio won the English Speaking Union Malta public speaking competition held at Le Méridien St Julian’s Hotel.

She will represent Malta at the International Public Speaking Competition in London in May. The runners-up were Mert Gulen and Giulia Palmier.

At the contest, nine first-year sixth formers from St Aloysius College, Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary, Verdala International School and St Edward’s College were given five minutes each to speak on the topic, chosen by ESU London: ‘To be ignorant of the past is to remain a child.’

The judging panel, headed by James Corby, senior lecturer and head of the Department of English at the University of Malta, included Isabel Warrington and Fiona Captur.
