Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has said Enemalta workers were betrayed by Joseph Muscat and were now living a “nightmare”.

“The Prime Minister promised in his electoral programme that Enemalta would not be privatised. Instead, that is exactly what has happened, and Joseph Muscat is doing nothing to ensure that workers’ conditions and pay will remain unchanged,” Dr Busuttil said in an interview on Radio 101.

Confusion surrounding the workers’ future has persisted since the recent purchase of a 33 per cent stake in the corporation by China’s Shanghai Electric Power.

Dr Busuttil said the workers were being kept in a state of uncertainty over how and where they might be redeployed, and whether their take-home pay would be affected.

Describing the situation as “incredible”, he expressed solidarity with the workers and their families.
