The editorial titled ‘Politics and morality: edgy affair’, states: “Politicians may not be morally worse than the rest of us but since, if elected, they become representatives of the people, they are then expected to act correctly all the time” (February 28).
An effective way of restoring high standards of probity and integrity among politicians is to make political deceit a crime.
In his book The Rise of political lying, Peter Oborne suggests that if company directors who make misleading statements can be prosecuted and, in extreme cases of dishonesty, jailed, the threat of criminal prosecution would make politicians hesitate before they decide to make extravagant and false claims.
An aside, taken from Smile Makers website: “Politicians, like diapers, should be changed often (and for the same reasons).”
Indeed, not all politicians stink! Some act as moral human beings.
