Last week, the Tarxien local council was supposed to hold its monthly meeting for February as stipulated by the Local Councils Act.

In view of the fact that the mayor was indisposed, the meeting should have been presided over by the deputy mayor, in accordance with the provisions of the Local Councils Act, which lays down that:

“In the absence of the mayor, the person presiding the meeting shall exercise all the functions of the mayor according to these standing orders”.

On the day of the meeting, three other Labour councillors informed the executive secretary that they were unable to attend the meeting, which had been scheduled a month in advance, and this meant that there was no quorum and the meeting had to be cancelled.

Now one starts to wonder whether this was purely a coincidence or if there was some other underlying factor. I believe that it is up to the residents of Tarxien, who elected the councillors to work in their best interests, to judge whether this meeting was cancelled frivolously or whether this was a genuine case of a number of councillors being indisposed at the same time.
