QPR have reported a loss of £9.8 million for the year ending May 2014.

The club said they had cut expenditure by £22 million and that they would continue to drive down player costs in future years.

A statement from QPR read: “Expenditure was reduced by £22 million, mainly driven by lower player costs and this trend will continue in future years.

“The club’s shareholders and directors are of the opinion that the club is moving in the right direction and on track with its mid-term and long-term business plans.”

Zouma downplays Desailly comparison

Kurt Zouma was labelled “our new Marcel Desailly” by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho after the League Cup final win but is playing down comparisons with the World Cup winner.

Mourinho selected defender Zouma in midfield for his 17th Chelsea appearance and the 20-year-old Frenchman did not look out of place in the 2-0 Wembley defeat of Tottenham.

“That is a lovely thing, what the boss said,” Zouma said.

“(But) it is too early to say that because Desailly is a legend.

“I have never met Desailly but one day I hope I will see him.”

Subotic says no

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has turned down Serbia coach Radovan Curcic’s request to resume his international career ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The 26-year-old centre-back last played for Serbia in October 2013, when he walked out on the national team at the end of their futile 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

He tore his knee ligaments a month later but after returning last August, he turned down a call-up by Serbia’s former Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, who stepped down in November after only one point from the opening three Euro 2016 qualifiers.

“We had a sincere talk and it’s clear that Subotic is not ready to return to the national team at this point in time,” Curcic said.

Johnson arrested

Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson has been suspended by the club after being arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16.

The 27-year-old England international was due to travel with the rest of the squad to east Yorkshire yesterday afternoon for tonight’s Premier League fixture at Hull.

A club statement said: “Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation.”

Sources had earlier confirmed that Johnson had been arrested and remained in custody helping Durham Police with their inquires.

Japan close in on coach Halilhodzic

The Japan FA’s talks with Vahid Halilhodzic on the vacant national team coaching job are progressing well and a deal could be in place before friendlies against Tunisia and Uzbekistan this month, JFA president Kuniya Daini has said.

The JFA want Javier Aguirre’s successor in place this month so he can take in the start of the J-League season and be fully up to speed before the World Cup qualifying campaign gets underway in June.

The JFA said previously the manager would be foreign and picked from a shortlist of five after Mexican Aguirre was sacked last month because of fears his alleged involvement in a match-fixing case in Spain could hurt the team.

Last days of Somers

Rangers have announced non-executive chairman David Somers has resigned from the club’s board of directors.

The 7am statement to the Stock Exchange followed speculation on Sunday night which suggested the 66-year-old – a deeply unpopular figure with fans – was ready to walk before he was pushed out of the club at a general meeting on Friday.

His departure leaves the Ibrox club with just two board members, chief executive Derek Llambias and finance director Barry Leach – both of whom can expect to be swept out when shareholders vote later this week.

Dyke keen on FIFA candidates debate

All four candidates for the FIFA presidency have been invited to take part in a live televised debate and English FA chairman Greg Dyke has offered to host it at Wembley.

Sky and the BBC have written to the four candidates – current president Sepp Blatter, FIFA vice-president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, Dutch FA president Michael van Praag and former Portugal international Luis Figo – inviting them to take part in the broadcast debate involving fans from around the world.

Dyke said he would welcome such an event and would help stage it if the quartet agreed.

He said: “I would love to see the four candidates for this election get in a room together and be questioned. We would happily host it at Wembley.”
