There were four cases in 2013 and six last year during which police firearms were fired accidentally, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela told Beppe Fenech Adami (PN) in reply to a parliamentary question.

In six of the cases, the officers responsible for the weapons lost their authorisation to handle weapons until they were re-trained and a fresh certificate was issued.

In one case an officer was given an official warning while no action was taken in the other three cases.

Seven of the cases took place at the quarters of the Rapid Intervention Unit. In one case, it was found that the weapon was defective.
