Petrol and diesel will be 3c cheaper at the pump this morning, the government fuel company Enemed has announced.

Petrol will now sell at €1.35 per litre and diesel at €1.28 per litre. This is the third downward revision this year after prices for both fuels dropped by 2c in January and 4c in February.

The Energy Ministry said the latest price reduction came against a background of rising fuel prices across the EU. The pump price of fuel increased last week in all EU countries bar three, where it remained stable.

“We are able to do this because our policy seeking stability has reaped positive results,” the ministry said, explaining that last month Enemed had concluded a number of deals that made it possible for prices to drop.

The ministry said that under the current administration the price of petrol will have fallen eight times while that for diesel six times.

Referring to the price reduction in a speech at Ħamrun, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat criticised Opposition leader Simon Busuttil for having a short-sighted vision for the energy sector.

“The Opposition wanted us to be at the whim of the market just because for a few months the international price of oil was slipping, but such a policy would mean prices would have to increase now when the price of oil is climbing . . . instead we are lowering the price,” Dr Muscat said.

In a statement the Nationalist Party said it was thanks to the pressure mounted by Dr Busuttil that the government was reducing the price of fuel.

It accused the Prime Minister of using the fuel reductions as a smokescreen to hide his shortcomings in the Cafe Premier scandal.
