Ajax win: Champions Ajax Amsterdam snapped runaway leaders PSV Eindhoven’s 17-match un-beaten streak in the Dutch league with a 3-1 victory in the top-of-the-table clash yesterday. An 83rd minute free-kick from Danish international Lasse Schone followed by a goal in stoppage time from Anwar El Ghazi ensured an end to PSV’s 100 per cent home record this season and cut their lead to 11 points. PSV had not lost in the Dutch league since September.

Africa Cup: Hosts Guinea have ruled out switching the dates of the 2023 African Nations Cup finals to accommodate the Qatar World Cup, their sports minister said. Domani Dore contradicted a statement by FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke, who said last week that the 2023 Nations Cup would be pushed back six months to June from its usual January date. “We cannot accommodate the Nations Cup in June, it is the rainy season,” Dore said yesterday.

Parma woes: Parma’s financial crisis knows no ending as yesterday their stadium had its electricity cut off. Reports said the power supply to the Stadio Tardini was cut off due to unpaid bills. That means even if the club did find a way to get the team on the pitch, they’d have no floodlights or other basic supplies. Parma’s match away to Genoa was cancelled yesterday. The electricity had already been cut off at Parma’s training ground with youth team coach Hernan Crespo stating last week his players had to take cold showers.

Probe: Police have launched an investigation following disorder at the Championship match between Rotherham and Millwall on Saturday. After Rotherham scored in the 85th minute at the New York Stadium, a number of supporters tried to invade the pitch, forcing police to step in. Several stewards were attacked, leaving two with minor injuries, and additional officers were deployed. No arrests had been made but that there was extensive evidence and a post-incident investigation will be conducted into the actions of both clubs’ fans.

A-League: A late Terry Antonis strike gave Sydney FC a 4-3 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in an A-League derby at the weekend that effectively ensured the Asian champions would not feature in the play-offs this year. The Wanderers battled back from 3-0 down to square the match up when debutant striker Kerem Bulut scored his second goal in the 53rd minute but Socceroos midfielder Antonis lashed the winner home from a tight angle 15 minutes from time. Victory kept Sydney FC in fifth place while Wanderers remain rooted to the bottom of the 10-team league with one win in 17 matches.
