There were a total of 506 applications for the scrappage scheme offer, benefiting from a €400,000 Budget allocation.

The idea was to encourage motorists to get rid of their old vehicles and invest in new cars with lower emissions.

Applicants were entitled to a handout of between €700 and €900 upon purchase of a new M1 vehicle. These can take up to eight passengers, in addition to the driver, have a CO2 emission not exceeding 130g/km, are not longer than 4.5 metres and are licensed for private use only.

The old vehicle would have to be deregistered.
