The search for a Chinese woman who was swept out to sea has been put on hold because of adverse weather.

The woman, 27, fell into the sea at Dwejra in Gozo at about 2pm on Wednesday after she was hit by a large wave.

An army spokesman said a helicopter was deployed early yesterday morning for an “extensive search”.

A search and rescue launch was also sent out but it had to turn back because of the bad weather. And divers from the Explosives Ordnance Devices section could not get into the sea because of the rough water.

A 37-year-old Hungarian man who was with the woman was also dragged into the sea at the same spot but was rescued.

A friend of hers was taken to hospital suffering from shock.
