Liverpool’s Europa League campaign ended at the scene of one of their greatest European triumphs as they lost on penalties to Besiktas in the Ataturk Stadium in Turkey yesterday.

The Turkish side won the last 32 clash 5-4 in the shoot-out with Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren missing the decisive penalty after the two-legged encounter had ended 1-1 on aggregate, following Besiktas’s 1-0 win on the night.

Croatia centre back Lovren blasted his effort high and wide to spark wild celebrations at the stadium where Liverpool beat Milan on penalties 10 years ago to clinch their fifth European Cup.

Elsewhere, holders Sevilla came through a testing encounter at Borussia Moenchengladbach to reach the last 16 where they were joined by Italian sides Inter and Fiorentina, who also beat British opposition.

Roma highlighted a memorable night for the Serie A after they beat Feyenoord 2-1 in a match marred by crowd violence to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

Adem Ljajic and Gervinho netted for the Italians in a match that was suspended early in the second half because of crowd trouble with the Italian side leading 1-0. The referee led the teams off the pitch in the 55th minute after the home fans throw objects onto the pitch, including a giant plastic banana.

The teams returned about 10 minutes later as Rudi Garcia’s men progressed to the Last 16.

Sevilla, boasting a 1-0 lead from the first leg, twice took an early lead at the BayArena through goals Carlos Bacca and Machin Vitolo but Gladbach struck back both times through Granit Xhaka and Thorgan Hazard.

The holders were then indebted to several fine saves from Sergio Rico to keep them ahead on aggregate before Monchengladbach’s challenge suffered a setback when they lost Xhaka to a 70th-minute red card.

Even with 10 men Gladbach still looked a threat, with Hazard hitting the post, but Vitolo’s second of the match late on finally ended the German club’s hopes as the Spaniards won 3-2.

Inter edged Scottish champions Celtic 1-0 to go through 4-3 on aggregate after a high-scoring first leg was followed by a cagey return in Italy where Fredy Guarin got an 88th minute winner.

Inter’s Serie A rivals Fiorentina beat English visitors Totten-ham Hotspur 2-0 and 3-1 on aggregate with German striker Mario Gomez and Mohamed Salah scoring in the second half.

Two goals from Jose Rondon helped Zenit St Petersburg ease past PSV Eindhoven 3-0 in their second leg in Russia to complete a 4-0 aggregate success.

Everton progress

Everton comfortably completed their progress into the last 16 of the Europa League as a Romelu Lukaku brace helped them beat Young Boys 3-1 at Goodison Park, sealing a 7-2 win on aggregate.

Torino got the better of a ding-dong battle in torrential rain to eliminate Athletic Bilbao.

The Serie A side twice saw their lead pegged back but finally prevailed 3-2 on the night to win 5-4 on aggregate with their goals coming from a Fabio Quagliarella penalty, Maxi Lopez and Matteo Darmian.

A Jonathan De Guzman second-half goal was enough for Napoli to beat Trabzonspor 1-0 at the San Paolo and progress to the last 16 stage 5-0 on aggregate.
