The 2014-15 Autocross National Championship series at the Ta’ Qali circuit were held regularly on Sunday despite the bad weather and persistent rains that fell for most of the day.

However, all Motocross events had to be postponed because of the slippery surface and the ASMK, the organisers of the championship, have already announ-ced that this weekend’s programme of races will also be cancelled due to safety concerns.

The conditions were not really ideal for racing on Sunday but nonetheless there was a healthy entry of 25 cars for the Autocross championship.

During the three heats, Christian Mark Galea (Fiat Ritmo) and Noel Vella (Ford Escort) accumulated the highest score of the day to book places in the A Final.

Matthew Borg and Andrew Pisani, both Vauxhall Nova, Vince Farrugia, inside a Volkswagen Polo, and Malcolm Borg (Opel Corsa) also qualified for the race which counts for points.

Farrugia seized the initiative right from the first corner and went on to defend his top placing till the end of the race.

The Borg brothers were giving a hard chase and so was Galea. In the end, however, Matthew Borg had to retire with mechanical trouble, paving the way for his brother Malcolm to clinch the runner-up spot ahead of Galea’s Fiat Ritmo and the Ford Escort driven by Vella.

The B Final contenders were Melo Zammit (Opel Corsa), Godfrey Gauci (Ford Fiesta), Godwin Martin (Opel Corsa), Lucas Pace (Honda Civic), Philip Grima (Ford Escort) and Jason Martin (Volkswagen Polo).

The race had a troubled start when the Opel of Martin and Pace’s Honda collided and marshals intervened to stop the race and clear the debris.

Godwin Martin made it to the restart and had an outstanding race to finish first in front of Jason Martin and Gauci.

Dean Farrugia, on his Citroen AX, won the Standard Class race.

He was followed home by Joseph Vella inside his Ford Fiesta.
