George dei Conti Navarra, President, Association of Lyceum Past Students, writes:

Mentioning George Grech would, no doubt, bring thoughts of a Liċeo headmaster who dedicated a good number of years to see the school excel in secondary education for young boys.

George was very successful in instilling in students under his care a sense of sharing and of taking on responsibilities in life.

Those same students are today's generation of family leaders who now instill in their own children the same valuable principles that had been passed on to them by the headmaster of their time at the Lyceum.

They all yearn for those stupendous years they had spent at the Lyceum under the care and wise guidance of a dedicated headmaster who wanted the school to rise to a high standard.

George worked ever so hard to witness the start of a special event that continues to be held, the bicycle marathon, now in its 16th edition. Over the years, this event has been the source of funds from which many good causes benefited.

Each year, George was instrumental and attended all the meetings of the organising committee.

Rain or shine, he never failed to turn up to give his contribution and ensure that everything would run smoothly. His participation went even further by offering to man the cash point at the food and drinks bar during the marathon weekend. Another milestone in his life was the assistance he had given to Guido Saliba who, in 1994, founded the Association of Lyceum Past Students (ALPS).

It was the birth of a dynamic association of ex-alumni who never stop reminiscing about their childhood and the instruction they acquired from the Lyceum. His enthusiastic participation in, contribution and commitment to the association have been duly recognised when his name was included in a revised ALPS statute, which made him a permanent member ad honorem.

Over the past 20 years of ALPS , George occupied many different posts on the council of administration. Up to last December, he was still sitting around the council table together and attending the monthly meetings.

George leaves a great void in the lives of his heirs but bequeaths a great inheritance of love and affection that nobody can take away from them.

He would have been 80 years this July. ALPS salutes one of its stalwarts. May he now be remembered for all the good work he carried out during his life.

Rest in Peace dear George.
