Liverpool exited the Europa League on penalties as Besiktas ensured the Reds' return to Istanbul was not a happy one.

Ten years ago Liverpool famously won the Champions League at the Ataturk Stadium but this time they left as losers, Dejan Lovren producing the only unsuccessful spot-kick in 10.

The hosts had won the match in normal time, Tolgay Arslan making it 1-0 in the 72nd minute, and with sides locked on aggregate extra-time provided only stalemate.

After nine fine penalties, £20million defender Lovren despatched his effort into the stands, denying the former winners a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Roma advanced courtesy of a 2-1 win over Feyenoord, but it was an ugly advert for the sport with severe crowd trouble, an apparent incident of racism, two red cards and a near 15-minute delay after officials ushered the players from the pitch.

Goals from Adem Ljajic and Gervinho scored the vital goals for Roma but the off-field behaviour soured any celebrations.

All five Italian sides progressed to the next round, with Torino, Napoli, Fiorentina and Inter joining Roma.

Torino edged a ding-dong battle with Athletic Bilbao 3-2 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate.

Fabio Quagliarella's penalty, Maxi Lopez's header and Matteo Darmian's eventual winner ensured Andoni Iraola's excellent goal and one from Oscar De Marcos were in vain.

Fiorentina claimed the first English scalp of the night with a 2-0 win over visiting Tottenham.

Tied at 1-1 going into the game, the Serie A side took the spoils thanks to finishes from Mario Gomez and Chelsea loanee Mohamed Salah.

Last week's 3-3 thriller between Inter and Celtic was not repeated at San Siro, where the hosts claimed the only goal of the game in the 88th minute.

Celtic had looked unlikely to spring a surprise from the moment Virgil van Dijk was shown red nine minutes before half-time, but held on to a stalemate until Fredy Guarin popped up with the winner.

Napoli, already 4-0 in front, saw Jonathan de Guzman net the only goal of the game against Trabzonspor.

Sevilla put their Primera Division struggles behind them to win 3-2 at 10-man Borussia Monchengladbach, and 4-2 overall.

Monchengladbach twice came from behind to level matters before Machin Vitolo's second goal of the evening proved decisive and Granit Xhaka's red card removed any doubt.

Everton are the last Premier League side standing after a recording a bruising aggregate scoreline of 7-2 against Young Boys.

It was 3-1 at Goodison Park, Romelu Lukaku adding two more to his hat-trick in the counterpart fixture.

Dinamo Moscow came from behind to beat Anderlecht 3-1, Aleksandar Mitrovic's opener rendered academic by Aleksei Kozlov, Artur Yusupov and Kevin Kuranyi.

Runaway Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven were thrashed 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate by Zenit St Petersburg as Hulk repeated his goal from the first leg and partner Salomon Rondon grabbed a brace.

Villarreal came from behind to beat Salzburg 3-1, backing up their 2-1 home success as Luciano Vietto hit the target twice.

Dynamo Kiev responded to last week's 2-1 loss at Guingamp with a 3-1 home victory.

The game was poised for extra-time when Christophe Mandanne's lucky finish brough the French outfit back from two behind, but Oleg Gusev's penalty settled it in normal time.

Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik was the match-winner for Ajax, scoring twice in a 3-0 over Legia Warsaw.

Club Brugge brushed aside Aalborg 3-0 to ease into the next stage, Wolfsburg advanced despite a goalless draw at Sporting Lisbon and Dnipro's home win was enough to see off Olympiacos, who battled with 10 men to a 2-2 draw.
