Twenty-six students from 15 schools recently took part in the APS Inter-School Tournament which was played at the St Paul’s Missionary College library, Rabat.

Cosmin Alexa, from Newark School, won the five-round tourna-ment with maximum points.

The highlight of the event was the high placing occupied by two girls, Jamie Farrugia and Martina Portelli, both from Sta Luċija Secondary. They finished second and fourth respectively with four points each.

The rest of the honours went as follows: Girls: U-10 Lena Zammit (Chiswick); U-12 Melina Stagno (Mġarr Primary); U-14 Emma Pontavic (Pembroke Primary).

Boys: U-10 Matteo Stagno (Mġarr Primary); U-12 Damian Cauchi (St Aloysius); U-14 Steve Mizzi (St Edward’s College).

First student from St Paul’s Missionary College was Alexei Galea.

Patrick Aquilina, APS Bank marketing manager, distributed medals and trophies to the winners.

The tournament was held with the assistance of Peter Sammut Briffa and Ron Sammut, from the Malta Chess Federation.
