Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil has received maximum backing from his party’s administrative council over his stand on the Swiss Leaks saga.

The PN said the council “unanimously confirmed” Dr Busuttil’s decision last week to suspend any person on the Swiss Leaks list with an official connection to the party.

Dr Busuttil had warned party members of suspension a few days after the Swiss Leaks story broke. Until then the only named Maltese person on the HSBC list of secret account holders was former Enemalta chairman Tancred Tabone.

However, last Saturday former PN minister Michael Falzon, who was a member of the party’s executive, suspended himself from the party over an undeclared Swiss account.

He admitted holding €460,000 in a Swiss bank account, which he opened in 1985, claiming the proceeds came from architectural services rendered abroad. Mr Falzon said he repatriated the cash and regularised his position in 2008.

Last Sunday, former minister Ninu Zammit was suspended by the PN when his name surfaced in a news report linking him to an undeclared Swiss account.
