Malta has made progress in digital connectivity rising above the EU average, but a number of factors seemed to be holding back the development of its digital economy, the European Commission said.

It noted that all Maltese households were covered by fixed broadband and all networks provided at least 30 Mbps.

But although Malta was doing well in terms of the availability and sophistication of eGovernment services, only 27 per cent of internet users were fully engaging with public authorities online.

This could be due to the fact that only 70 per cent of Maltese were internet users and only 55 per cent of the population possessed at least basic digital skills (EU average is 59%).
