The barracks of the Armed Forces of Malta at Luqa yesterday opened its gates to 87 young men and women aspiring to become soldiers

The four-month recruitment programme had attracted more than 900 applications. The candidates underwent an extensive filtering process that involved a physical fitness assessment, interview and a complete medical examination.

After a brief presentation by AFM officers, each recruit took an oath of allegiance to the people, State of Malta and its Constitution and marched together.

They will be subjected to a rigorous physical training regime to prepare them for the demands of military life and will learn skills such as weapons handling, marksmanship, ceremonial drill, first aid and map reading. Humanitarian law and military ethos will also be taught.
